The second in the Pathfinder 2e spell painting series required a very different approach. For one, the same roommate who's tip inspired "Heal" suggested I should pay more attention to composition, and ditch the square canvas since I don't like posting on Instagram anyway. So, I measured the final art size of Pathfinder 2e half page illustrations, and sat down with my sketchbook to thumbnail. I'm glad I did! The basic idea for the painting always remained the same, but the process of working through thumbnails resulted in a more interesting composition and challenging perspective.

Another new process added to the workflow included some basic 3D modeling. Given the challenging perspective I had chosen, I used Clip Studio Paint's 3D human models to get my rough sketch for the figure.

Normally, when I do paint backgrounds, I paint the figure first and then paint the background around them. Going into it knowing I wanted the magical door effect to be semi-transparent, I determined drawing the background first made the most sense. Because of our upcoming comic set underground, I have several books about fungi and mushrooms sitting around the living room, and I used that for inspiration on the mushroom shapes.
